Kovalev & Canadiens parting ways?

It has been no secret that the Montreal Canadiens have been actively shopping forward Alexei Kovalev around the league for the past month. The tension between Kovalev and the Canadiens has taking another turn as Kovalev will not accompany the Canadiens on their recent road trip to Washington and Pittsburgh. Kovalev has been told by GM Bob Gainey to stay home while they explore their options. Gainey has told the Montreal media that Kovalev is not on the same page as the coaching staff. Gainey has been in discussions with two Eastern Conference teams and one Western Conference team according to a source.

The Montreal Canadiens have re-assigned forward Sergei Kostitsyn to the Hamilton Bulldogs of the American Hockey League Official Release from the Canadiens: Forward Gregory Stewart has been recalled from the Hamilton Bulldogs of the American Hockey League. Forward Sergei Kostitsyn has been assigned to the Hamilton Bulldogs. Stewart will join the club in Washington. Stewart, 22, registered one point (1 assist), posted a plus-1 rating and averaged 9:38 of ice time in three games this season with the Canadiens. The left-winger, who started the season in Hamilton, is sixth in the AHL this season with 170 penalty minutes. According to TSN.Ca, The Atlanta Thrashers have¬†traded defenceman Mathieu¬†Schneider to his former team, the Montreal Canadiens. In exchange, the Thrashers receive a second round draft pick in 2009 and a third round¬†selection in 2010.¬† In addition to Schneider, Montreal receives a conditional pick at this year’s draft.

Montreal 4 – Pittsburgh 2 Despite a strong performance from Luca Caputi who opened the scoring 2:30 into the game, the Penguins gave up three unanswered goals and lost for the third straight game Tuesday night against the Monteal Canadiens. Caputi appearing in his first NHL game scored in his first NHL shift. Caputi started the game on the fourth line with Bill Thomas and Eric Godard but was rewarded with minutes on the first power play unit and saw some ice time with the 2nd line.
