Pitt improves to 1-1; defeats Buffalo 27-16

The Buffalo Bulls gave the Pitt Panthers a bit of a scare at Heinz Field Saturday evening. The Bulls got out to a 6-0 lead after the first quarter and went to the locker room down 10-9. The Bulls kept it close until the fourth quarter when Panthers running back LeSean McCoy scored a 2 yard touchdown on a 10 play – 74 yard drive that took up 4:40. It was McCoy’s third touchdown of the game and the score put the Panthers up 24-16 midway through the 4th quarter. Kicker Connor Lee put the game away on the Panthers next drive converting a 42 yard field goal to put the Panthers up by 11.

Upset Alert: East Carolina 24 – West Virginia 3

For the second straight week East Carolina knocked off a top 25 team. Last week it was #17 Virginia Tech, but this week East Carolina took it another level and defeated the nations #8 team West Virginia.

#19 Penn State defeats Oregon State 45 – 14

Penn State was clicking on all cylinders and looked very impressive Saturday afternoon defeating the Oregon State Beavers 45 – 19. Penn State dominated the Beavers in all assets of the game. Running back Evan Royster led the Nittany Lions ground attack scoring 3 touchdowns and rushing for 141 yards on 17 carries.

4th Quarter 7:00 minutes remaining Pitt 24 – Buffalo 16 The MAC hung tough with some of the heavyweights of college football but in the end big plays and the lack of didn’t provide any upsets. Let’s take a look at the early action of Week 2: Ohio State 26 Ohio U. 14– Ohio State had their hands full with Ohio University as they might have been looking forward to next weeks game against #1 USC. The game was in doubt until Ray Small returned a punt 69 yards to put OSU up 26-14 with just over 6 minutes remaining. West Virginia-East Carolina Preview

East Carolina will not have the luxury of playing a team with a suspect quarterback this week. West Virginia QB Pat White has been given the green light to put the ball in the air to complement his running ability. White was 25 of 33 for 208 yards with 5 TDs and 1 INT while running for 63 yards in the Mountaineers 48-21 win over Villanova. The new found passing attack will give West Virginia the ability to beat teams that stack the line of scrimmage with eight, and sometimes nine, in the box.

Pitt vs Buffalo Preview

PITT v. Bowling Green Wrap Up Pitt was more talented than Bowling Green, but they did not play 4 quarters of football. Bowling Green’s Spread Offensive Attack led by Junior Tyler Sheehan played efficiently and did not turn the ball over. The Bowling Green defense was opportunistic and made plays when they had too. In the end, Bowling Green defeated Pitt 27-17.

Pitt Men’s Basketball Recruiting Update

Dominic Cheek 6’6″ 185lb/shooting guard/NJ Dominic Cheek is a potential NBA lottery pick and is one of the nations top shooting guards. At this moment Cheek holds over 25 scholarships. North Carolina heads the list of teams pursuing the talented guard but the New Jersey native is giving serious consideration to a couple Big East teams.

Oregon St. – Penn St. Preview

Penn St. will have their first test of the season when it meets up with Oregon St. at 3:30 on Saturday in Happy Valley. Last week Penn St. had a warm-up game against Coastal Carolina in which they racked up 594 yards in total offense Рthe most in 13 seasons. The Nittany Lions should be able to move the ball consistently on the ground given that Stanford, not known for their ground game, rushed for 210 yards on the Beavers last week. Four Penn State ball carriers gained at least 60 yards last week which led to a team total of 334 rushing yards.

Penn State suspends three players for Saturday’s game vs. Oregon State

Penn State head coach Joe Paterno has announced Penn State players Maurice Evans, Abe Koroma and Andrew Quarless will miss Saturday’s game against Oregon State after police found marijuana in their apartment earlier this week. University police seized marijuana from an apartment shared by the three players. Cornerback A.J. Wallace also lives in the apartment but coach Paterno has stated Wallace was not involved in the incident.
