Erik Bedard makes his Pirates debut, taking the mound against Phillies ace Roy Halladay. Bedard went 5-9 with a 3.62 ERA in 24 starts for Seattle and Boston last season.The oft-injured left hander is 2-0 with a 1.71 ERA in three starts against the Phillies, but he has not faced faced the Phillies since the 2006 season. Jayson Stark said it best in his column today that the Phillies come from behind win last night is what baseball is all about. The Dodgers bullpen which has been one of the league’s best this season, gave up five runs in 4 innings as the Dodgers could not hold off the Phillies. The Dodgers are in a must win situation when they send Chad Billingsley to the mound in Game 5 Rays lead Red Sox 2-1 The Tampa Bay Rays are playing phenomenal baseball and can play any kind of game. The Rays hit four homeruns in game 3 and got a strong pitching performance from Matt Garza. Andy Sonnanstine will try to win Game 4 for the Rays when he faces knuckleballer Tim Wakefield in Game 4 of the best-of-seven series on Tuesday night.

NLCS: Phillies Edge Dodgers 3-2

 

Philadelphia 3 – LA Dodgers 2 (Phillies lead series 1-0) Chase Utley and Pat Burrell homered off Dodgers pitcher Derek Lowe in the sixth inning to back another strong performance by Cole Hamels, and the Phillies having taking a 1-0 lead in the NLCS. Burrell who is tied with Mike Schmidt for the third-most postseason homers in Phillies franchise history has hit three home runs in the past two games. Dodgers super star Manny Ramirez went 2-4. Manny Ramirez had a first-inning RBI. It was his 24th LCS RBI which ranks him third all-time. Ramirez is nine away from tying Bernie Williams (33). Game 2 is Friday in Philadelphia, with Phillies right-hander Brett Myers facing Dodgers righty Chad Billingsley.

MLB: Hamels leads Phillies to Game 1 victory

 

Philadelphia 3 РMilwaukee 1 Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels stifled the Brewers Wednesday afternoon, allowing two hits, striking out nine in eight innings. Hamels retired the Brewers first 14 batters and led Philadelphia to their first playoff win since 1993. The Brewers making their first postseason appearance since 1982, played well but a miscue from centerfielder Mike Cameron, rattled 22 year old pitcher Yovani Gallardo who only lasted four innings. Hamels was brilliant using off-speed pitches to make it a long day for hitters Prince Fielder and Ryan Braun. The Brewers will look to rebound Thursday afternoon when ace C.C. Sabathia takes the mound for his fourth consecutive start on three days’ rest. Brett Myers (10-13) will be the Phillies Game 2 Starter
