Saturday’s NFL Draft Buzz

Family members of LeSean McCoy made it known this week that he would declare for the NFL draft. On Friday he had an emotional meeting with the coaching staff and now he won’t make a decision until next week. Guaranteed dollars is the big thing in the NFL. There is a major difference between a late first rounder and early second round pick. The last pick in the first round in the 2008 draft was Kenny Phillips. His signing bonus was about

Pittsburgh No.1 in ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll

The Pitt Panthers Men‚Äôs basketball are ranked No. 1 for the first time in the 101 seasons of Pitt basketball. The Panthers made the jump from No.3 to No1 in the ESPN/USA Today coaches’ rankings on Monday after previously unbeatens North Carolina to Boston College and Connecticut (to Georgetown) lost in the last week. Pitt received 30 of 31 first-place votes. Pitt improved to 14-0 after winning its first two Big East games (against Rutgers and Georgetown. For a complete run down of the top 25 Click Here

#3 Panthers cruise past #8 Georgetown

#3 Pitt cruises past #8 Georgetown 70 ‚Äì 54: Dejuan Blair had 20 points and 17 rebounds, and the Panthers (14-0, 2-0 Big East) never trailed in the game. The Panthers dominated the Hoyas in all assets of the game. Rebounds: 46-21 Bench scoring: 14-2 Points in the paint: 48-22. Blair (20 pts), Young (14 pts), Biggs (14pts). Pitt is a much different team than in years past. They have a player who can take over a game in Sam Young, a low post threat in Blair who is showing the ability to dominate at both ends of the floor and a bench that has the potential to be among one of the nation‚Äôs best. According to reports over two dozen scouts were in attendance. Blair is currently believed to be a mid 2nd round pick if he were to declare. Performances like this will skyrocket his draft stock butRead More »

Pitt, WVU basketball Coverage

Finally the Big East Schedule has started and TIOPS will begin picking up our coverage of Pitt and WVU. Pitt 1-0 in the Big East has a tough task ahead of them Saturday afternoon when they take on #8 Georgetown. This is a great game to start the new year for the Panthers and now the real games begin Pitt 13-0 and ranked #3 nationally, have been in this territory before. The difference this year is maybe they actually have a player who can take over a game in Sam Young. The Panthers inability to have a player on their roster that could take over a game in the NCAA tournament is the reason they have yet to get past the sweet 16 during the Howland/Dixon era. Young is showing signs that he is that player. Dejuan Blair looks much improved this year. He did a lot of weight trainingRead More »

Pitt – Oregon State Preview/ Draft Buzz

Pitt seems very focused and ready for there first bowl game since 2004. On the flip side, Oregon State is heading into this game dejected after losing convincingly at home to in state rival Oregon and blowing the opportunity to play in the Rose Bowl. To make matters worse Oregon State is playing with out the Rodger’s Brothers who accounted for over 50% of the Beavers offensive production. When the Panthers are on offense expect a heavy dose of LeSean McCoy and LaRod Stephens Howling. I expect Bill Stull will have solid game after having sometime to shake off the concussion sustained in the Rutgers game. The passing game should showcase Jonathan Baldwin to springboard him into the off season. On defense, expect the Panthers to double NFL Wr Prospect Sammy Stroughter, play coverage and generate a pass rush using only the front four. With OSU’s top two rushers outRead More »

NFL Mock Draft Version 1

Our first NFL Mock is now available. We will be doing 2-3 mock drafts¬†per month leading¬†up until the NFL Draft in April. (Photo courtesy of SD Dirk) 1. DETROIT LIONS,¬†MATTHEW STAFFORD, QB, GEORGIA (6-2 235 lbs) – I really do not believe that either Stafford or Bradford is worthy of the top selection in this year‚Äôs draft, but the Lions need at the position is probably going to force them into the selection. Stafford has the big arm and is probably the safer pick at this point. With that said, both Bradford and Stafford are not definitely entering the draft. If (and I don‚Äôt see this happening) both Stafford and Bradford remain in school for another season there is not a quarterback worthy of the top selection. Two other options for the Lions are to either address the offensive line by drafting Andre Smith or Michael Oher, or they couldRead More »

Pitt’s McCoy #4 in third set of rankings

11/28/08 — 2009 NFL Draft Running Back rankings 1. Knowshon Moreno- Georgia, Eligible Soph- Moreno is another red shirted player who is eligible as a sophomore. Moreno is the total package. It is almost impossible to find any flaws in his game at this point. At this point he is a lock to be a first round selection. 2. Chris Wells- Ohio State, Jr- Wells has been slowed by injury this year. He also has been underperforming a little bit in the bigger games but It shouldn‚Äôt hurt him too much and he will most likely end up being the second running back taken this year. 3. Javon Ringer- Michigan State, Sr- Ringer has carried Michigan State this year. He has outperformed every other senior back this season which could get him a first round selection. 4. LeSean McCoy- Pittsburgh, Eligible Soph- McCoy wasn‚Äôt red shirted but he is stillRead More »

NCAA: McCoy to return for junior season

The Pitt Panthers football program received some very good news this afternoon when star running back LeSean McCoy announced he will return for his junior season. Rumors have been swirling that McCoy would declare for the NFL but McCoy has put those rumors to rest for now. McCoy 20, (227 CAR – 1,125 YDS – 18TD’s) is rated among the top three running backs on many NFL draft boards and would likely be a 1st round pick if he were to declare for the NFL Draft. Still, the Draft is 5 months away and McCoy could change mind at anytime Source: Post- Gazette
