Development Camp Preview: A look at the defensemen and goaltenders

DEVELOPMENT CAMP PREVIEW While the Penguins prospect system is desperately lacking legitimate NHL forward prospects, that’s not the case on the blueline. Defensemen Olli Maata, Derrick Pouliot and Scott Harrington are the consensus top-3 prospects in the organization and Brian Dumoulin has also evolved into a top-5 prospect in the Penguins system. While the Penguins are deep with d-men prospects, the organization has also become much stronger at the goaltender position since last summer. Tristan Jarry, the Penguins 2013 2nd round pick, headlines the group of goaltenders to participate in the camp. Prospects Buzz: Two Penguin prospect camp invitees among top undrafted college players coveted by NHL teams

PENS SUMMER CAMP INVITEES COVETED Two college players, defenseman Andrej Sustr, Nebraska-Omaha university, and forward Antoine Laganiere, Yale, are among the highest coveted college players by NHL teams who are looking to dip into the college free agent pool this spring. [instory] How this relates to the Penguins is Sustr and Laganiere have been players of interest to the Penguins and both were invitees to the Penguins summer prospect camp this past July. Laganiere who possesses excellent size at 6-foot-4, 215-pounds, has 12 goals and 24 points in 29 games for Yale. Last year he had 19 goals and 33 points in 35 games for Yale. Coaches love the pro body he has. The Penguins have scouted bothRead More »

Observations on 2012 1st round pick Olli Maatta from Finland – Team USA game

In fact, there’s even some scouts who see some Ryan Suter type comparisons in Maatta. I had a chance to catch Maatta in action (second & third period) today on NHLnetwork for Team Finland who defeated Team USA 5-1 pre-competition action. Here’s my takeaway from Olli Maatta (1 assist, even rating) who was impressive and he fit the scouting report I’ve been getting from evaluators:
