DEVILS LEAD FLYERS 2-1 Alexei  Ponikarovsky and the New Jersey Devils have the favorite Philadelphia Flyers in a 2-1 hole. Ponikarovsky scored the OT winner putting home his own rebound on a 2-on-1 rush giving New Jersey a 4-3 OT win on Thursday night and a 2-1 series lead. Ilya Kovalchuk reportedly playing with a herniated disk in his back, had a goal and two assists in his return to the lineup and set up Ponikarovsky’s tally with 2:39 left in overtime as Kovalchuk caught the Flyers on a horrible change. Kovalchuk was exceptional in the game dictating the play, as was Zach Parise who was a force in the offensive zone. NHL playing hardball with Kovalchuk Again; Torres signs with Canucks


Around the NHL The New Jersey Devils and Ilya Kovalchuk have agreed to the framework of a new deal in the range of 12-13 years but at this time both sides are not able to push forward with the deal. After Devils officials and agent Jay Grossman met with NHL officials on Monday, the NHL has not signed off on the framework of the deal nearly 48 hours later. Discussions though are ongoing between officials from both sides. A league source told me earlier in the week that the framework of the new deal has Kovalchuk’s cap hit closer to $7 million than the previously $6 million cap hit for the 17 year – $102 million deal that was rejected. Crosby, Fleury named to Team Canada


As expected goaltender Marc Andre Fleury and Sidney Crosby were named to Team Canada today. Canada goes into the 2010 Winter Olympics as the favorites to win gold. Sidney Crosby was named an alternate captain. Penguins center Jordan Staal was not named to the team. “This is a pretty special honor. I’m pretty proud to be apart of it, ” Sidney Crosby said today on being selected to Team Canada. Team Canada Roster
