Steelers Camp Buzz – Monday’s Practice Notes: Backs on Backers

Monday’s Practice Report By Dale Grdnic LATROBE, Pa. — In an attempt to level the playing field, Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin announced which defensive player would be pass-rushing in the “Backs-on-Backers” drill Monday during training camp at Saint Vincent College, but outside linebacker Jarvis Jones still got the best of running back Le’Veon Bell in the featured matchup between the team’s top two draft picks. Jones blasted over Bell on one occasion and went around him on another, but the running back held his own in the third matchup. Tomlin said it was a natural matchup between first-round pick Jones and second-rounder Bell and “appropriate” to call their numbers at the same time. “Coach already told me that he wanted to see what I could do when we got the pads on, and I was ready for it.” Jones said. “I brought it. I gave some and took some,Read More »

Sunday’s Practice Notes: Reggie Dunn has strong day returning punts

SUNDAY’S PRACTICE NOTES By Dale Grdnic LATROBE, Pa. — Football in shorts, as Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin called the opening two practices, is over after Sunday’s training camp workout at Saint Vincent College. Let the hitting begin, as the Steelers will wear full pads Monday for the first time since last season ended at 8-8. “It’s like the first day of school,” Tomlin said. “It really is. Checking in here and getting back on the grass is one thing. Don’t get me wrong, but football is a game that’s played in pads. And (Monday) is the first day of school.” The Steelers had a beautiful second day of practice, after surviving torrential downpours Saturday, and got through both practically unscathed. Tomlin said there were injuries to cornerbacks Cortez Allen and DeMarcus Van Dyke. “Obviously, we look forward to (Monday) and an opportunity to carry our pads and take awayRead More »

Steelers training camp Top Storylines: Will Le’Veon Bell win the running back job out of camp?

STEELERS TRAINING CAMP STORYLINE The Pittsburgh Steelers report to training camp today and the Steelers go into camp with a lot of uncertainty. Coming off an 8-8 season, the Steelers are seen by many to be looking up to the Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC North. That said, the Steelers often surprise when they are viewed as likely having a down season and if this group stays healthy, they could easily be a 10 win team. The running back group tops the training camp storylines.  WILL LE’VEON BELL WIN NO. 1 RUNNING BACK JOB? When it comes to position battles, all eyes in training camp and the preseason is going to be on the running back. Last year the Steelers rushed for just 1,537 yards and Rashard Mendenhall never getting on track saw the Steelers go the entire season without a true No. 1 running back. Mendenhall, as expected,Read More »
