Cal Volleyball: Vulcans overwhelm Slippery Rock, 3-0

 

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 22) – The California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team snapped its two-game losing streak by defeating Slippery Rock, 3-0 (25-19, 25-9, 25-17), in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action on Friday night at Hamer Hall. With the win, the Vulcans improve to 17-9 overall and 12-2 in conference play to remain 1.0-game back of first palce in the PSAC West standings. Slippery Rock falls to 9-15 overall and 5-9 in the PSAC. Sophomore Chelsea Wilson (Bellwood, Pa./Bellwood Antis) led the Vulcans in kills, posting 11 in the contest while hitting at a .500 clip and also added four blocks (one solo). Junior Katya Kopanarova (Sofia, Bulgaria/81 Victor Hugo) and sophomores Kelly Fromknecht (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and Meghan Franz (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) each totaled seven kills to tie for second on the team. Cal U takes split of twinbill at Mars Hill

 

MARS HILL, N.C. (March 1) – Redshirt sophomore Randy Sturgill (Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg) scattered five hits in a complete-game victory on Monday afternoon as the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team took a split of a doubleheader at Mars Hill, winning 5-1 before dropping the nightcap 19-6. Playing their first games in three weeks, the Vulcans improved to 1-3 this season while the Lions moved to 8-5 this year following the split. In Game 1, Sturgill threw the third complete game of his career and first since April 2008 after missing last season due to injury. Against Mars Hill, he scattered five hits (three extra-base hits) and allowed only one unearned run in 7.0 innings with no walks and four strikeouts.
