Bill Cowher announced today at his weekly press conference safety Anthony Smith and Santonio Holmes could start Thursday against the Browns. Safety Ryan Clark may be out with a pulled groin and Cedric Wilson could be out with a ankle injury. “Regarding Ryan Clark and Cedrick Wilson, I’m not sure they’ll be able to make it on a short week. Certainly even with Troy and Hines,” Cowher said. “We’re still in the process of seeing where we are with the injuries.” Tyrone Carter filled in nicely in place of Polamalu and his solid play raised questions whether Carter should have been given the nod start out of traning camp over free agency signing Ryan Clark.

The Steelers take on the 4-8 Cleveland Browns who upended the Kansas City Chiefs 31-28. The Browns furry comeback was led by backup quarterback Derek Anderson, who put on a Tony Romo show for the Browns faithful. Anderson was 12-of-21 for 171 yards and led scoring drives of 81, 70 and 63 yards. He will make his first NFL start Thursday night. Starting quarterback Charlie Frye is expected to be out for the season with a broken wrist.
