The Penguins again got off to a poor start as the Canadiens dominated play in the first 20 minutes and led 1-0 after one period. Pittsburgh put together their strongest period of the season in the second frame, dictating the tempo and pace of the game, getting goals from Bennett and Letang.

Pittsburgh, though, was unable to build off that momentum and were plagued with a sluggish start to the third period, getting out-chanced 8-1 in the first nine minutes of the period. Tomas Fleischmann scored 5:20 in the period to put the Canadiens on top 3-2.
