Cal U features seven all-region players

 

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (Dec. 2) – The two-time NCAA Semifinalist California University of Pennsylvania football team featured seven players on the Daktronics All-Super Region 1 football teams, as selected by the region’s Sports Information Directors. Senior free safety Juan Butler (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport), junior cornerback Terrence Johnson (Braddock, Pa./Woodland Hills), sophomore offensive tackle Nate Nurse (Teaneck, N.J./Don Bosco/Rutgers) and graduate student wide receiver Marcel Pestano (Lehigh Acres, Fla./Lehigh/Pittsburgh) all received first-team honors. Graduate student punter Derek Fiorenza (Dowingtown, Pa./Dowingtown/Villanova), senior tight end Cory Garver (Cumberland, Md./Fort Hill/Delaware State) and graduate student quarterback Kevin McCabe (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland/Virginia) each garnered second-team accolades. The Vulcans led the region with four first-team picks and seven selections overall.

No. 7 Cal U wins Super Regional One, advances to NCAA Semifinals

 

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. (Nov. 29) – In a back-and-forth contest, senior linebacker Darren Burns (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) made a game-clinching play with 1:51 remaining to give the No. 7 California University of Pennsylvania football team a 27-24 victory over No. 14 Bloomsburg University at Robert B. Redman Stadium on Saturday in the Super Regional One Championship Game and NCAA Quarterfinals. The Vulcans improve to 11-1 on the season and advance to the NCAA Semifinals for a second-straight year. Cal U, who has won 10-straight-games since a Week 2 loss at Bloomsburg, will face No. 6 Minnesota State-Duluth in the NCAA Semifinals with the site and time to be determined later tonight. The game will be aired live on either ESPN2 or ESPN Classic regardless of time and/or location.

#7 Vulcans advance with 48-7 win

 

CALIFORNIA (Nov. 22) – Behind a stellar defensive performance and a quick-strike offense, the No. 7 Vulcans registered a 48-7 victory over Seton Hill University in the second round of Super Regional One on Saturday at Adamson Stadium to advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals against Bloomsburg University. The California University of Pennsylvania football team improves to 11-1 on the season, winning 10-straight games after suffering a tough 24-17 road loss against Bloomsburg in the second week of the season. The Vulcans entered the 24-team playoff as the second seed in Super Regional One after the Huskies received the top seed. Six Vulcans named to All-PSAC West teams

 

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (Nov. 19) – Junior middle hitter Ludmila Amaral (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Afonso Schimidt) headlined a group of six Vulcan players that earned All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division First and Second Team honors, released the league office on Wednesday. Amaral became the first player in recent school history to earn PSAC West Athlete of the Year. Joining Amaral as first-team selections were junior setter Renata Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Ateneu), senior middle hitter Thais Franca (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Padre Manoel De Paiva) and junior outside hitter Joanna Nist (Rockwood, Pa./Rockwood). The California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team won its second-straight PSAC Championship last week and enters the NCAA Tournament as the No. 1 seed in the Atlantic Region. Williams scores 31 as No. 2 Cal U wins, 71-50

 

CALIFORNIA (Nov. 16) – Junior guard Brooque Williams (Pittsburgh, Pa./Perry) registered the fourth 30-point game of her career and first of the season to lead the No. 2 Vulcans to a 71-50 lead victory over West Virginia Wesleyan College in the second day of the Masontown Trophy Tip-Off Classic on Sunday at Hamer Hall. Williams and senior guard Crystal Andrews (Johnstown, Pa./Johnstown) were each named to the all-tournament team with Williams receiving Tournament MVP honors after averaging 27.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. The California University of Pennsylvania women’s basketball team posted a 2-0 mark in the four-team tournament field that also featured Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Salem International University and West Virginia Wesleyan. CALIFORNIA (Nov. 15) – Following the results of the first-round games in the NCAA Division II Championship, the No. 7 California University of Pennsylvania football team will face Seton Hill University next weekend, Saturday, Nov. 22, in the second round of the national playoffs. The Vulcans earned a first-round bye and the No. 2 seed in Super Regional One, while the sixth-seeded Griffins claimed a 14-7 road victory against American International College (Mass.) in sloppy field conditions on Saturday. In the other regional semifinal match-up, top-seeded Bloomsburg University will face Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)-rival West Chester University. No. 2 Vulcans roll past Salem International

 

CALIFORNIA (Nov. 15) – The No. 2 California University of Pennsylvania women’s basketball team opened the 2008-09 regular season in impressive fashion, cruising to a 117-36 victory over Salem International University in the first day of the Masontown Trophy Tip-Off Classic. Under first-year head coach Heather Kearney, the Vulcans scored the second-most points in school history against the Tigers behind only the record of 119 scored against Lincoln University (1988). The 36 points allowed by Cal U is its fewest since the 2004-05 season. No. 16 Vulcans win second-straight PSAC title

 

CALIFORNIA (Nov. 15) – The No. 16 California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team earned its fifth Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship in school history and the league’s automatic qualifier for the NCAA Championship Tournament on Saturday following a 3-0 sweep (25-14, 25-22, 25-11) in the PSAC Championship Match against Lock Haven University in Hamer Hall. The Vulcans set a school record for most wins in a season by improving to 37-1, surpassing the previous mark of 36 by the 1992 team (36-3). Under the direction of first-year head coach Stephanie Burner, Cal U won its second-straight league title and third in four years.
