Pens Notes: Nick Petersen waived; Teams getting final signings taken care of; NHL/NHLPA CBA talks

The Penguins today cut ties with 2009 4th round pick Nick Petersen who officially was placed on waivers for $125. Petersen had 11 goals and 27 points in 52 games for Wilkes Barre/Scranton last season. The move grants Petersen his unconditional release from the organization and the Penguins were at the max limit of 50 contracts but will now have 49 players signed once Petersen is off the books and contract is terminated. Are the Penguins clearing a spot for a signing before the CBA expires on September 15th? There are no indications at this point regarding an NHL type signing in the works but there has been discussions of getting 2012 first round pick Derrick Pouliot under contract and

Penguins wait to hear back from Kennedy in morning on revised offers

2 year deal close? The Pittsburgh Penguins are confident that they will have Tyler Kennedy locked up to a new deal before Kennedy becomes an unrestricted free agent at 12:00 p.m. on Friday. GM Ray Shero told the Tribune-Review that the two sides are down to “short strokes.” “Hopefully we can find something by tomorrow, whether it’s a one-, two- or three-year deal that makes sense. “That’s what we’re trying to do now, ” Shero said. Indications late Wednesday night was that the two sides were making progress on a two year deal and such a deal is still considered the most likely scenario and something Kennedy’s camp has been open to. The Penguins are expecting to hear back from

Svoboda on Jagr situation: “Lot of things to sort through”

Latest Jagr Update Just spoke with Jagr’s agent Petr Svboboda for the second time today. As of 12:10 p.m. this afternoon, Svoboda indicated a decision was not imminent. When asked if he can confirm that a decision will come today, Svoboda said, “No” and he wasn’t sure when one would be made. Doesn’t mean one won’t be made today but right now he at least claims, there’s no timetable as Jagr is looking to make the “best decision”. What remains the reason for the delay, according to Svoboda?

Agent: No decision coming from Jagr tonight

Agent cites travels problems, need for Jagr to settle in Jaromir Jagr joining the Pittsburgh Penguins is on hold for at least one more day. “No decision will be coming tonight, ” {from Jagr}, agent Petr Svoboda tells Inside Pittsburgh Sports.com via phone just after 9:30 p.m. The reason why? Svoboda indicates Jagr had some “troubles traveling overseas”, which is the reason for the delay. Svoboda tells me he expects to talk to Jagr in the next hour (10:00-11:00 p.m.) when he {Jagr} gets settled, and that a decision is now likely to happen tomorrow. “We’ll talk at length in the morning, ” Svoboda said. “He’s had a long day.”

Jagr traveling to U.S.; Mum on Habs but Red Wings have made offer, per agent

Decision expected this afternoon Jaromir Jagr is enroute to the United States. His agent Petr Svoboda indicates a decision from the 39 year old is expected upon his arrival. “He is traveling to the States as we speak, ” Svoboda said. “Should be in New York by 3:30 p.m. and decision {should} come soon after.” The Penguins have confirmed that they made a 1 year offer Tuesday night but there has been some speculation that the Detroit Red Wings might be out of the mix. That doesn’t appear to be the case. “Detroit has made offer, Svoboda told Inside Pittsburgh Sports. The offer was made on Tuesday. “We have more than two offers, ” Svoboda reinterated. “Jaromir is looking to

Talbot not interested in signing with any team that trades for his rights

The Pittsburgh Penguins have explored trading the rights of Max Talbot but the possibility of Talbot’s rights being moved before Friday is very unlikely and I wouldn’t look for it. As reports out of Canada surfaced that the Toronto Maple Leafs could be closing in on acquiring Talbot’s rights, those in Talbot’s camp told Inside Pittsburgh Sports tonight that Talbot has no intentions to sign with any team that were to acquire his rights. Talbot has informed the Penguins of his intentions. “Max is preparing to go to July 1, ” a league source said.

Morning Buzz: Money factor remains obstacle in Jagr sweepstakes

The Pittsburgh Penguins have emerged as Jaromir Jagr’s preferred team to return to the NHL, sources close to the situation indicated late Wednesday night. The Penguins who have been in pursuit of Jagr in the past 48 hours, are also said to be onboard as an organization with the possible signing, despite what the organization might be saying publicly. A stumbling block though remains the money factor. Everything coming out of the organization for a few days now is that the Penguins will not tie up their cap space for the 39 year old winger or at the expense of losing others they want to keep. I’ve been trying to hammer that for days in the updates. As the team

Penguins make $550,000 qualifying offer to Dustin Jeffrey

The Pittsburgh Penguins have made a qualifying offer to Dustin Jeffrey, retaining his rights, sources indicate. Jeffrey is a pending restricted free agent. Jeffrey made $500,000 in 2010-2011 and players making less than $660,000 must be offered 110 percent of last years salary. Jeffrey’s qualifying offer is for $550,000 (2-way). Qualifying offers are due to players by June 27th. The Penguins have high hopes for Jeffrey who is recovering from off-season knee surgery. The Penguins believe he will have a full recovery.

Pens, Tyler Kennedy making no progress on talks centering around 2 years or more

Updates on Dupuis, Kennedy, Asham, Thiessen — Meant to post this earlier today but the Penguins and Tyler Kennedy continue to make no progress on discussions centering around a term of 2 years or more. There is no one connected to the situation who feels there will be a deal in place by next Friday’s draft, which surely will fuel trade speculation. There’s also a lot of doubts that either side is going to find common ground on a multi-year deal this summer. The thinking process from some is that things are moving into the direction where the only two realistic options emerging are a one year deal worth $2 million per season (or more) or a trade. — The
