Free Agency Chatter: Cardinals luring Larry Foote away from Steelers?

LATEST LARRY FOOTE RUMORS The vibe inside Steelers circles for weeks has been that veteran linebacker Larry Foote was considered a near lock to return to the Steelers as the two sides opened preliminary discussions in mid-February on a one year deal. With free agency just hours away, something appears up with Foote still unsigned. Agent Brian Levy,

Four Steelers UFA’s with best odds of resigning

STEELERS FREE AGENCY BUZZ Out of the Steelers 17 unrestricted free agents, several won’t be back, and few are a priority for the team who don’t plan to resign notable veterans Max Starks and Casey Hampton, and expect Mike Wallace and Ramon Foster to sign bigger deals elsewhere. The Steelers today are meeting with WR Steve Breaston at their team facility and there continues to be a sense that the Steelers get a deal done with Breaston at some point for the sole reason that there’s really not a market out there for the 29 year old receiver. However, the Steelers are only willing to offer the league minimum and they have felt Breaston wants more money than they are

Larry Foote, Steelers close to finalizing 3 year deal worth close to $8.85 million

The Pittsburgh Steelers and linebacker Larry Foote are in the process of finalizing a three year deal with the total worth of the contract worth close to $8.85 million, according to a league source. Barring an unforeseen development, Foote is expected to officially sign with the Steelers Monday morning and could participate in Monday’s OTA workouts. The Steelers have been courting Foote with a multi-year offer as the team has been in contact with agent Brian Levy. The parameters of the deal is finalized and Foote will receive upwards of $2.25 million per season. Although the Steelers are not offering Foote a starting job, he is being pursued as a potential replacement for close friend James Farrior beyond next season.

Larry Foote wants to join the Detroit Lions

Foote on the possibility of joining the Lions “Detroit is always No. 1,” said Foote, a Pershing grad who still spends his offseason in Detroit. “I mean, my agent is talking to them about me coming home, and we’ll go from there. But no question about it, that’s my first choice.” “I’ve been forcing (his release) the whole offseason,” said Foote, whose strength as a run defender certainly adds to his appeal for the Lions. “I’ve been asking for it all offseason, asking for a trade, and I guess they finally did something. I wish they’d have done it a little earlier. Technically, I’m a free man now, but a lot of the money (in free agency) has been spent.

NFL: Steelers to part ways with Larry Foote

A move that has been expected since the season ended in February, the Pittsburgh Steelers will cut ties with linebacker Larry Foote within the next week. Profootballtalk first reported this afternoon of the Steelers intentions to release Foote, citing a league source. Foote who has fell behind 2007 first round pick Lawrence Timmons on the depth chart, was due a salary of $2,885,000 in 2009. The Steelers were shopping Foote prior to the draft and the move will create cap space for the Steelers. Foote did not attend the Steelers OTA workouts last week but his agent did confirm that Foote would show up to mini-camp. The release will not happen until next week because

Pursuit of veteran wideout has no bearing on Limas Sweed

The pursuit of free agent wide receiver Ashley Lelie has no bearing on the progress of 2008 second round pick Limas Sweed. The pursuit of Lelie is to bring him in as a 4th receiver and act as a possible fall back plan if Sweed doesn’t progress into the #3 receiver that the Steelers think he will. 2009 3rd round pick Mike Wallace will contribute on special teams but he needs a lot of work on his route running as he makes the jump to the NFL. As of early Tuesday afternoon, the Steelers have yet to make an official offer to Lelie but Lelie’s representatives expect an offer to be made by mid-week. As expected the Steelers will release

Dixon will have opportunity to unseat Charlie Batch

The Latest Steelers Buzz The agent for Larry Foote has confirmed that Foote will attend the Steelers mandatory mini camp in two weeks. Foote in the final year of his contract, did not attend the Steelers OTA’s this week. The Steelers have not approached Foote about restructuring his contract and while the team would like to keep him around, he could still become a salary cap casualty this off-season. The Steelers are up against the cap and Lawrence Timmons will be taking even more reps away from Foote this season. The Steelers won’t have too many position battles in camp this season but the #2 spot on the quarterback depth chart is up for grabs. Dennis Dixon will be given
