The Latest NHL Buzz

Sunday Janaury 17, 2010 Trade talks are heating up with the trade deadline 6 weeks away but with some many teams still in the playoff mix, it’s unlikely many deals will be struck before the Olympic trade freeze (February 12 – February 28th) as teams are leery to make a run at veterans who are participating in the Olympics. In the Eastern Conference the only team in sell mode at this point is the Carolina Hurricanes. Even the Toronto Maple Leafs are only 9 points out of the playoffs. In the Western Conference, Edmonton is clearly in sell mode while the Blues and Blue Jackets are expected to begin shopping a number of veterans in the next couple weeks. The

Post-Game Wrapup: Penguins fall to Islanders 3-2

The New York Islanders in the playoff hunt near the end of the November? That hasn’t been the case too often for the struggling franchise this decade but the Islanders continue to be a tough out and improved their record to 10-9-7, defeating the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 Friday afternoon. New York overcame a 2-1 third period deficit, as Sean Bergenheim tied the game, a 1:24 into the period and rookie sensation John Tavares scored on a rebound with 6:12 left in the third period to lift the Islanders to a 3-2 win. Although the Penguins held a 2-1 lead after the second period, the Islanders controlled the play, out-shooting the Penguins 37-21. Pittsburgh was flat for most of the afternoon

Inside the Atlantic Division: Rangers not concerned about Marian Gaborik

Gaborik remains limited in camp Star winger Marian Gaborik has been limited in the first week of training camp with a groin pull. Not a good sign for the injury prone winger but for now the Rangers don’t appear to be very concerned. They contend that he will be ready to go when the Rangers open the season in Pittsburgh. Center center Brandon Dubinsky remains a holdout. The Rangers have not increased their two year offer and they won’t. If your looking for a Kessel – Dubinsky trade…..it’s not going to happen. Bruins have minimal interest in Dubinsky. Newcomers Ales Kotalik and Christopher Higgins are having a strong camp. The Rangers have added some speed up front. Higgins is a

Islanders not the only the suitor for Miroslav Satan

Miroslav Satan is pushing for a return a Long Island but a source close to Satan’s camp told TIOPS this afternoon that “others {teams} are involved”. Has a return to Pittsburgh been completely ruled out?

The Latest Penguins Draft Buzz; Opportunity to move up for the Penguins?

The Latest Draft Buzz Seven hours until the NHL draft begins and while Pittsburgh plans on staying put at #30, they have had discussions with the Vancouver Canucks (22) and the New York Islanders (26) about moving up a few spots. Vancouver is extremely interested in moving back and accumulating more picks. If Pittsburgh pursues this potential trade, it will be to land one of their top forward targets in Kyle Palmieri, U.S. Under-18 (USDP), Jordan Caron, Rimouski (QMJHL) Landon Ferraro, Red Deer (WHL) or Zach Budish, Edina High (USHS-Minn.) If Pittsburgh stays at #30 which appears very likely at this point, team officials will be thrilled if defenseman Simon Despres, Saint John (QMJHL) is available at #30. Pittsburgh has

Pittsburgh doesn’t have the cap flexibility to commit “market value” money to Rob Scuderi

Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Rob Scuderi became a household name during the Penguins Stanley Cup run. The longer the Penguins played, the higher Scuderi’s market value went up. This past season Scuderi brought home a salary of $725,000. At age 30, Scuderi has the opportunity to test the free agent market for the first time in his career as a known name and Scuderi will cash in. Scuderi, the Penguins top defensive defenseman was an instrumental part of the Penguins success this season and under most situations would be a top priority for the Penguins. With $46.85 million committed to 14 players for the upcoming season, Pittsburgh has $11.585 million combined to four defensemen, not including slight raises for Alex Goligoski
