With hot start Pirates brass made quick decision on extending Derek Shelton

The Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday announced the team has signed manager Derek Shelton to a contract extension. Shelton who was entering the final year of his contract had guided the Pirates to a 142-242 record over his first three years as manager. Off to a surprisingly roaring 16-7 start, management quickly made the decision that Shelton is the right manager for the next phase of the Pirates rebuild that just maybe might be getting accelerated…….. Shelton’s extension is believed to be for [hide] two years through the 2025 season that included a club option for a third year. “I really believe that he’s the right person for the job,” GM Ben Cherington said over the weekend of Shelton. “He’s worked

Andrew McCutchen returning to Pirates

In a feel good story, former Pirates great Andrew McCutchen is returning to Pittsburgh, agreeing to a one year, $5 million contract with the club on Friday. The Post-Gazette’s Jason Mackey first reported the reunion between the Pirates and McCutchen. The signing was orchestrated by McCutchen’s desire to finish his career in Pittsburgh and a conversation initiated by McCutchen to owner Bob Nutting put things in motions. Last year, McCutchen batted .237 for Milwaukee, hitting 17 home runs and 69 RBIs. McCutchen has hit below .240 in back-to-back seasons, hitting a career low .222 in 2021 with the Phillies. The 36 year old, though, has shown some power ability with 44 home runs over his last two seasons.  Some milestones

Rumors: Reynolds camp sought $128 million contract

[hide] There’s a gulf of close to $60 million dollars between the Pittsburgh Pirates and outfielder Bryan Reynolds who last month officially demanded a trade from the team. How Far apart were the two sides? Reynolds was offered a 6 year deal worth $72 million dollars. The last negotiations between the two sides had the Reynolds camp seeking a 6 year, $128 million dollar contract, which Pirates officials have privately called a ridiculous demand that’s not in reality.[/hide]

Henry Davis goes No. 1: The Pirates Draft Board is always going to be different than most teams

Seeking an under slot prospect with the No. 1 selection, the Pittsburgh Pirates brass kept many executives and insiders around the league guessing on what direction they were going with the No. 1 overall pick. The direction many saw them going was the high school shortstop route with left handed hitting shortstop Marcel Mayer widely viewed as the likely pick, a prospect many draft pundits have called a future superstar, with Jordan Lawlar a close second. Instead the tight lipped Pirates surprised at No. 1 in selection catcher Henry Davis out of Louisville. Regarded by many as the best college hitter in the draft, Davis slashed a line of .370/.482/.663 with 15 home runs and led the ACC with a

Trade Fallout: Pirates get a haul for Musgrove?

Several years away from being at least competitive and fielding a respectable team, the Pirates are in a complete tear down of the roster and any veteran with a pulse on that roster and a rising salary is going to get shipped out of town. The trade of Joe Musgrove Monday night was some luck coming on the Pirates side in that they were able to take advantage of Musgrove’s trade value being much higher than it really should have been. The local media will greatly overrate the Pirates return. Call it a haul or whatever, the Pirates, though, at least got a promising return for a low level No. 3 caliber pitcher if you buy into his 2020 campaign

With no hope of contending for several years, Pirates deal Bell to WAS

No Hope, Full-Blown Rebuild in the Works With a full blown rebuild in the works and several years away of having any hopes of competing again, the Pirates’ way of economics always had Josh Bell heading out the door sooner than later, and on Christmas Eve, the Pittsburgh Pirates traded Bell to the Washington Nationals. In the deal, the Pirates received pitchers Wil Crowe and Eddy Yean. Crowe, 26, made his MLB debut in 2020, posting a 11.88 ERA in three appearances. Yean, 19, posted a 3.50 ERA and 1.17 WHIP in 10 starts at rookie ball in 2019. As with any pitcher as young as Yean, it will be a while before the Pirates know what they have if
