Morning Practice Notes, Penguins prepare for Flyers


The Penguins went through their first practice of the playoff season this morning at 10:30 a.m. as the team prepares to take on the Philadelphia Flyers Wednesday night in the first round of the playoffs. The teams primary goal was to claim the 4th seed but going into the weekend with Philadelphia having two games in hand, and Carolina owning a tiebreaker, the players were not very optimistic and were expecting to start the playoffs on the road. All of that changed yesterday when the Rangers rallied to upend the Flyers 4-3. Practice Notes All 23 skaters were accounted for this morning. The Penguins are a very confident team right now but they are not taking anything for granted and the vibe around the room is this year’s playoff series will be much more competitive than last year’s conference finals Miroslav Satan and Craig Adams

Since the Penguins 6 game winning streak in the month of November ended at the hands of the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday, November 18th, 2008 (2-1 SO loss), the Penguins are 15-20-3 after begining the season 11-4-2. It can be argued that inconsistent goaltending, lack of toughness, wrong personnel are all legitimate reasons for the Penguins struggles this season. One major area of concern has been the Penguins power play (16.7%) and the Penguins struggling power play comes in as one of the main reasons the Penguins are out of the top eight in the Eastern Conference right now In the Penguins 20 regulation losses since they began the season 11-4-2, the Penguins power play is a woeful 8-88.
