Not a big surprise here, but Penguins winger Steve Sullivan is headed to the free agent market on July 1, agent Steve Bartlett told Inside Pittsburgh Sports.com on Thursday afternoon.
”He’ll go to July 1, ” Bartlett said via phone indicating that something could still be worked out between the Penguins and Sullivan, but “likely not” before Sunday at noon.
Indications are Pittsburgh remains interested in resigning Sullivan but are not ready to committ to him at this point as they intend to explore options in free agency.
Coming off a healthy season with 17 goals and 48 points, Sullivan will be an attractive option on the free agent market. Sullivan last season made $1.5 million and should command a deal somewhere in the $2 million range, NHL sources say. Two teams believed to have interest include the Carolina Hurricanes and Nashville Predators.
