Day 1 was all about battles and it was a glimpse of the compete level the Penguins want to play under the staff in being tougher in the hard areas of the rink. And they may have the personnel to do it in some areas — as at least upfront; — this is a forward group built to play a heavier style of game than previous rosters. There was a sense Thursday of ‘Future Hall-of-Famer’ or not, everyone is going to be all out. This training camp is not going to have a country club feel, that’s for sure. Can the Penguins practice like this all the time? Absolutely not and it will eventually wear off on star level players, but it was clear that Muse is trying infused a new foundation for how the group is going to practice and develop habits on and off the ice. Detailed oriented and working your tail off is going to be a staple for the staff.

So far Muse is making good first impressions. Players have marveled about Muse’s work ethic, in the building at 6 am and not leaving till 9-10 pm, he has an NFL coach mentality where you’re in the building 14-16 hours a day.

“I love competition, i think everybody loves competition. It just drives things,” Muse said. I’ve always found it to be awesome seeing it at this level, it doesn’t matter what’s on the line.”
