Pittsburgh Steelers tackle Willie Colon will miss a significant period of time and likely the entire 2011 season, after being diagnosed late this afternoon with a torn triceps. Colon suffered the injury late in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 35-7 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

The Post-Gazette reports that Colon’s surgery is scheduled for Tuesday morning. The most likely scenario is Colon being put on IR but there’s a slight chance they don’t as Colon doesn’t have a full tear, source says. Colon though has a rehab period well over 8 weeks, according to an individual with knowledge of the injury.
The loss of Colon is a major blow to the Steelers who now have rookie Marcus Gilbert as their primary backup at both tackles position. 2nd year pro Chris Scott is also an option at tackle but is nowhere near to being NFL ready.
