Pens defenseman Deryk Engelland has been suspended for three games, the NHL announced this afternoon.
Engelland receives a three game suspension for an illegal check to the head of Chicago Blackhawks forward Marcus Kruger during NHL Game #488 in Pittsburgh on Tuesday, Dec. 20.
Engelland will miss games Dec. 23 at Winnipeg, Dec. 27 vs. Carolina and Dec. 29 vs. Philadelphia. He will be eligible to return Dec. 31 at New Jersey.
According to the league, this was a reckless hit to the head and what did Engelland in was him elevating and leaving his feet when hitting Kruger. Based on the leagues evaluation of the hit, if Engelland was a repeat offender, he likely would have received at least a five to six game suspension.
