Since last week, there has been talk out of the Penguins organization that the team has wanted to send Dustin Jeffrey to the minors but Jeffrey having to clear waivers is something the Penguins have not wanted to risk.
Therefore, the Penguins have gone the conditioning assignment route and for the next two weeks, if they want, get the luxury of keeping Jeffrey in the minors.
It is a needed move that will get Jeffrey top-6 minutes and special teams time, something he isn’t getting at the NHL level.
Here are the details:
The Penguins have assigned Jeffrey and enforcer Steve MacIntyre to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League on a conditioning assignment.
Jeffrey and MacIntyre will remain on Pittsburghâs 23-man active roster and will be paid their NHL salary during their conditioning assignment.
Jeffrey, 23, has played in six games for Pittsburgh, going scoreless while averaging 9:17 minutes per game. Jeffrey spent the first eight games of the season on injured reserve as he recovered from a knee injury suffered last season.
MacIntyre, 31, has appeared in four games for the Penguins, going scoreless with two penalty minutes. MacIntyre was signed by Pittsburgh as an unrestricted free agent on July 12.
The transaction was made after 4:00 p.m., so the Penguins can keep both players on the conditioning assignment for 14 days starting tomorrow Wednesday, November 9th until Wednesday, Novemeber 23rd.
To keep either player in Wilkes Barre past the duration of the conditioning assignment, Jeffrey and MacIntyre would have to clear waivers to remain in Wilkes Barre.
