GAME 2: Penguins – Islanders What We Learned
Tristan Jarry bounced back in a big way in Game 2 with a 37 save performance in leading the Penguins to a 2-1 victory on Tuesday night to even the best-of-seven series at 1-1. In Game 1, Jarry made the tough saves, but was plagued by a number of leaky goals. A goaltender mirrored with inconsistent play for much of this season, it wasn’t shocking to see him bounce back in Game 2.
“I thought Tristan had a great game,” said Mike Sullivan. He’s done that for us for most of this year. He’s been a big part of the success that this team has enjoyed to this point.”
— Most positive sign for the Penguins in the win —
They closed out the win by going back to the blueprint of what got them here this season. Pittsburgh came out flying again, got the Islanders on their heels and were rewarded with a 2-0 lead in period one. The second period, though, saw a similar trend in how the Penguins became less and less threatening and momentum started to swing into the Islanders direction.
In period three, Pittsburgh got back to playing a fast, systematic style in all three zones. They didn’t sit back, but they defended in layers in the third with speed and structure. In Game 1, the Islanders dictated the flow of play from late in the second period on through overtime. In Game 2, the Penguins were able to get it back by going back to their blueprint.
— A healthy Brian Dumoulin is more important to the Penguins chances of winning this series than having Evgeni Malkin —
— Forechecking Dominance in the Game 2 Win: —
Sidney Crosby is on just another level right now in how methodical he is as a forechecker and what a night for the Blueger line in causing the Islanders fits below the dots with pressure and smarts on the forecheck.
