2ND PERIOD SUMMARY
The Pittsburgh Penguins took complete control of the game with power play goals from Phil Kessel and Carl Hagelin 33 seconds apart in giving the Penguins a 3-0 lead.
Kessel struck at 7:05 of the period for his 2nd goal of the game in showing great patience to beat Holtby. Hagelin then redirected an Olli Maatta shot past Holtby for the Penguins third goal of the game. The power play goals came on a Brooks Orpik 4-minute minor for high sticking.
Pittsburgh out-shot Washington 9-2 through the first 11 minutes of the period but a Chris Kunitz tripping penalty with 2:23 left in the period gave the Capitals life and T.J. Oshie scored with a 1:30 left to cut the Penguins lead to 3-1.
Shots in the period were 12-8 Pittsburgh, overall Penguins have a 23-18 edge.
The Penguins haven’t lost all season when leading after two periods.
