Will the Edmonton Oilers GM Search head to Pittsburgh? While Penguins assistant GM Bill Guerin is not being looked at in league circles as a betting favorite (before the interview process) to take over in Edmonton, he has been discussed prominently over the last month among the Oilers brass and is going to get a look during the search. Sources say Paul Coffey has been among those in the Oilers organization pushing for Guerin to get serious consideration.
Guerin who is regarded in league circles as having an old school/new school type management approach has earned great respect from rival executives as a talent evaluator with a tremendous work ethic, something the Oilers desperately need from a new GM. What makes Guerin an attractive candidate for an Oilers organization in turmoil, but with a prime years’ Crosby/Malkin type duo in place, is that Guerin has worked under two veteran General Manager’s in Ray Shero/Jim Rutherford to see what works and doesn’t work in trying to consistently build a Stanley Cup contender on a yearly basis. That’s the goal in Edmonton with McDavid in place.
