Casey Mittelstadt broke a 1-1 tie with 4:09 left in the third period to lead the Colorado Avalanche (36-24-2, 74 pts) to a 4-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins (24-30-10, 58 pts) on Tuesday night. In their final game before the deadline the Penguins played very well in the loss as Colorado added two empty-net goals, out-shooting the Avs 33-25 and holding their own in controlling play 5 vs 5. Rickard Rakell netted his 29th goal of the season and Alex Nedeljkovic has put together two straight solid starts in stopping 21 of 23 shots. —
