The Pittsburgh Pirates announced today third baseman Jung Ho Kang facing DUI charges and fleeing the scene of an accident in South Korea, will not report to spring training this week when position players are due to report. Kang’s reporting date is undetermined.
“Based on our current information, Jung Ho will not be in a position to report to camp by the 17th,” team President Frank Coonelly said in a statement. “According to our communications with his representatives, it is probable that he will have a trial in Korea on DUI-related charges on February 22. It is not known how long the trial will last or when any sentencing phase that might be necessary would be scheduled.”
The Pirates continue to stand behind Kang.
Kang’s arrest this off-season was his third DUI arrest since 2009 in South Korea. In July 2016 he was investigated by Chicago police for a sexual assault allegation.
