As many are wondering if tonight could be Mike Johnston’s last game behind the bench, there is significant support and intrigue in the Penguins organization about veteran coach Ron Wilson, sources tell Inside Pittsburgh Sports.
Wilson had strong support from the likes of Assistant GM Bill Guerin and others during the interview process in 2014 and the support for Wilson in the organization remains there from many in the organization, notably those under Jim Rutherford.
But now there are complications with going in this direction. Few believe ownership (that is looking to sell the team) have the stomach go out-of-house with a hire because of financial reasons and Wilson’s shaky relationship with Phil Kessel likely won’t have Rutherford wanting to go there. Not to mention Wilson is coaching Team USA in the World Juniors. Lots of support in organization but unlikely direction Rutherford goes.
