Ian Rapoport of NFL network reports the Steelers plan to release safety Mike Mitchell sometime next week.

An NFL source confirms the Steelers informed Mitchell and his agent Friday morning the team will release him if he doesn’t agree to a paycut.

The Mitchell camp is calling what the Steelers propose as being a ‘significant paycut’ for him to stay.

Mitchell, 30, signed a 5 year, $25 million contract in 2014.

He is due a base salary of $5 million this season, carrying a $8,135,418 cap hit.

Releasing Mitchell outright would save the Steelers $5 million against the cap, taking a dead money cap hit of $3,135,418. [/hide]
