Pittsburgh Pirates Photo Day After yesterday’s blown save, Pirates reliever Jason Grill has been removed from the closers role, Rob Biertempfel of the Tribune-Review reports. Manager Clint Hurdle informed reporters this afternoon in Chicago of the move.
According to Hurdle, Mark Melancon will move into the closers role, while Tony Watson could see some spot duty.
Grilli has struggled mightily this season, losing 2-3 mph on his fastball. He has four blown saves on the season and the and the 37 year old has allowed five runs on eight hits and five walks over his last 6 2/3 innings of work. His ERA is 4.34 on the season.
