Goaltender Brent Johnson, as expected is out for tonight’s game due to a groin injury. According to Dave Molinari of the Post-Gazette, John Curry will be Fleury’s backup tonight.
Curry who is the organizations No. 4 goaltender on the depth chart behind Fleury, Johnson, and Brad Thiessen, was once seen as Fleury’s long-term backup at the NHL level.
Curry had a disastrous 2009-2010 season but is having a nice bounce back season this year in Wilkes Barre.
Curry is 11-5 with a 2.33 GAA and .913 save percentage. Curry’s cap hit is $375,000 less than Thiessen.
Forward Arron Asham traveled with the team to Washington….
but his status is in doubt tonight. He has a lower body injury and his skating was very poor in yesterday’s game. Asham did not play in the third period against Florida.
Including Asham, Pittsburgh currently has 13 active forwards.
During the holiday roster freeze, teams can call up players on an emergency basis.
The Penguins will not conduct a morning skate today in Washington.
