Tyler Kennedy signed a two year extension eight days ago and he rewarded the Penguins front office this afternoon scoring two goals including the OT winner. Kennedy has been among the Penguins top performers in training camp and moved up to the 2nd line with Petr Sykora out of the lineup. Kennedy got the Penguins on the board 38 seconds into the game and the Penguins controlled the play for the first ten minutes of the game. Kennedy’s first goal of the season with his first in 29 games dating back to last season. Down 1-0 the Senators picked up the physical play and tied the game at 1-1 when Shean Donovan (1) scored with (Assists: Dean McAmmond, Filip Kuba). Pittsburgh had chances in the first period to get up early on the Senators but they struggled on the power play going 0-5

Head coach Michel Therrien gave Evgeni Malkin significant time on the penalty kill and it paid off for the Penguins in the second period. Malkin caused a turnover and went in all alone against Martin Gerber to score a shorthanded and put the Penguins up 2-1. Malkin was a presence on the penalty kill all game.The Senators responded scoring two unanswered goals and were up 3-2 going into second intermission.

The loss of Ryan Whitney and Sergei Gonchar was evident for the Penguins. Going into the third period the Penguins were 0-7 on the power play. Down 3-2 the Penguins got a big goal from an unlikely source. Sidney Crosby hit defensemen Rob Scuderi with a beautiful pass who was jumping up into the play and Scuderi scored glove side to tie the game at 3-3. In 71 games last season Rob Scuderi had 0 goals. Goaltenders Marc Andre Fleury and Martin Gerber played strong in the third period, keeping the game tied at the end of regulation. Over time saw a lot of up and down action and Tyler Kennedy caused a Jason Spezza turnover and scored his second of the game to give the Penguins a 4-3 victory.
