The last Steelers first round pick to hold out was quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in 2004. With under 7 hours until all signed players must report to camp, contract talks between Omar Khan and Joel Segal, the agent for Maurkice Pouncey have heated up in the past 24 hours.
Inside Pittsburgh Sports has learned that after little progress throughout much of the day on Thursday, the two sides inched closer to a deal late Thursday night.
According to those close to Pouncey, he should be officially signed on Saturday with optimism that an agreement could be reached by late Friday.
To no surprise, Segal is seeking 8-10% above slot value, which was a snag earlier this week.
Sean Weatherspoon, the 19th overall selection in the draft signed a 5 year deal worth $17.5 million yesterday, with $10.5 million guaranteed which was above slot value.
Segal is known to go down to the wire but there is word that he wants to now accelerate talks and get a deal done before the 49ers sign Mike Iupati which will force Segal’s hand in negations.
Pouncey is seeking about $11 million in guaranteed money with significant playtime bonuses.
Indications are a deal will get done in the next 24 hours.
