Pittsburgh’s coaching opening is not viewed as a premier job. The Penguins did not plan to spend big on their next coach, think $2-$2.5 Million per season at the max, but it’s still a job a lot of names from various sides are interested in. — One reason I never mentioned Rick Tocchet as a candidate is because it was never a thing nor was it going to be. Neither side was going to be aligned in this search as Tocchet is headed to Philadelphia after also interviewing with Seattle and Boston. Sounds like he was offered the Seattle job at one point in the last week.
— The Penguins brass has no concerns of bringing a first-time coach on board, believing there is precedent elsewhere to easily sell a Sidney Crosby on it who is staying out of the search. There’s no Lebron James type influence coming here from 87.
