— One prospect heading into the deadline completely off limits is defenseman Calen Addison. Pittsburgh is giddy about the prospect of fielding a core defensively in Brian Dumoulin, John Marino, Marcus Pettersson, and Calen Addison in the not-too-distant future.
— As much as the Penguins look like a top-flight Stanley Cup contender, one of the biggest concerns in the organization is the lapses in Kris Letang’s game defensively losing them a playoff series. Pittsburgh has been phenomenal this season as a team in developing an identity with a tightened up structure and puck pressure game, but honing in Letang hasn’t been part of the changes.
— He’s not a top target of Penguin management, but over the last two months, Kings winger Tyler Toffoli has become a favorite of Penguin scouts among rental trade targets, sources say. Toffoli with 14 goals and 16 assists on the season, continues to grade out very well. The Kings remain confident of landing a second-round pick and some for Toffoli. There is a lot of action on the 27 year old winger in a week rental market.
— Pittsburgh pushed really hard to complete a Jason Zucker trade just prior to the All-Star break. They’ve looked at another legitimate top-9 winger with term and a higher range cap hit. Some execs believe Bill Guerin’s preference is to take the Zucker situation to the summer. Guerin, sources say, has weighed in with rival General Manager’s on the optics of making a significant trade with the organization he just came from.
— Trying anything to move on from Alex Galchenyuk, Pittsburgh has also looked into the route of taking on term in return. A Galchenyuk for Alex Chiasson swap has been kicked around, sources say. Chiasson who the Penguins had on their free agent board last summer, has one more season left on his deal with a $2.15 million cap hit.
— There were rumblings in December that Nick Bjugstad’s injury was a herniated disc issue, potentially tied to the disc surgery he had four years ago. The Penguins remain quiet as Bjugstad’s recovery is now heading into 10+ weeks.
