Penguins General Manager Kyle Dubas is right to play the card of let’s give it another go next season like he professed recently in the lead-up to the March 8th trade deadline. Saturday night’s third period implosion has to finally lead to the direction the rest of the way for the 23/24 season to get some veterans out of here by Friday to open up spots and play some younger guys the rest of the season as an evaluation tool for building next seasons roster.
The Penguins in complete control through the first fifty minutes of play just fell flat on their face in a game that had to have and played the percentages of starting their No. 1 goaltender against the weaker opponent in the first night of a back-to-back.
“We just beat ourselves in a number of different ways,” Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan said. “We had complete control of the game, played a really good game up until that point, and we just made some egregious mistakes. It’s hard to recover from.”
