Mike Sullivan’s decision to start Joel Blomqvist Saturday night vs the Toronto Maple Leafs was bold in that the Penguins opened the door to potentially throw Blomqvist to the wolves against a high-end skilled team that the Penguins don’t stand a chance to skate with. Instead minus the inability to steal a road win, everything from the Penguins carrying the play in the first period to Blomqvist putting together another solid start, it was a highly encouraging loss from a number of angles in that the team is showing a pulse after the opening night disaster. The coaching staff has been very impressed in how Blomqvist handles himself on the penalty kill for a young netminder and Blomqvist has been a calming presence between the pipes.
