The Boston Red Sox and the Pittsburgh Pirates made a three player trade Wednesday afternoon, as the Pirates traded Adam Laroche to Boston for two minor league prospects.
The two teams could strike another deal before the July 31st deadline as the Red Sox remain “highly interested” in Pirates SS Jack Wilson.
Wilson was discussed in the trade that sent Adam Laroche to Boston on Wednesday.
The Red Sox would like to upgrade their defense for the stretch run and have been eyeing Wilson over the past week.
The Pirates are expected to wait until the weekend to see if a market develops for Wilson.
Among the teams to be kicking the tires on Wilson have been
the Mariners, Mets and Twins.
*The Mariners interest has been on and off for sometime and Pittsburgh held exploratory talks with the St. Louis Cardinals but they in another direction.
It is very unlikely that the Mets end up making a play for Wilson.
If Pittsburgh doesn’t find the right deal, they remain open to signing Wilson to an extension.
The team recently offered a two year deal worth $8 million.
Wilson is batting .277 this season.
