MLB Trade Deadline Frenzy
4:33 p.m. It’s official – TIOPS has learned Jason Bay to Boston; Manny to LA. Could be others involved. John Heyman of CNNSI first reported the deal.
4:25 p.m. Dodgers to acquire Bay? More to come. Looks like the Dodgers late inquiry might have payed off – From the 1:00 p.m. hour – 1:44 p.m. “Jayson Stark is confirming the Blue Jays have inquired about Bay with the Cardinals being unconfirmed. The Dodgers made a inquiry I’ve been told.”
3:58 p.m. There’s has been something brewing with the Red sox for the past hour. Rosenthal is reporting talks may be back on.
3:48 Despite reports from Carrol and Goldstein, a deal has not been struck. As I reported at the 2:00 p.m. hour, the Pirates were targeting Wade Davis or Jeremy Hellickson to be included into the deal. Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com is reporting Brignac may not be available.
3:28 p.m. Will Carrol and Kevin Goldstein are reporting the Pirates have acquired Shortstop Reid Brignac and right-hander Jeff Niemann. Brignac and Niemann were on the table prior to the Pirates breaking off talks with the Rays to pursue the Boston/Florida deal. Still no confirmation. Late word was the Pirates were still targeting Wade Davis or Jeremy Hellickson to be included into the deal
2:40 p.m. Rumors are still out there that the Sox/Pirates could have something brewing if the Red Sox are able to move Manny Ramirez separately. A three way deal between the Pirates – Dodgers and Red Sox could be brewing It’s getting late though. John Heyman of CNNSI reports the Dodgers are also in talks with the Red Sox about Manny Ramirez. Heyman speculates the Sox are seeking outfielder Matt Kemp. Heyman also speculates the Marlins deal isn’t believed to be dead
2:23 p.m. Indications are Pittsburgh had a very good return coming their way in the proposed three team trade.
2:16 p.m. Rays offer as of yesterday centered around Niemann/Brignac/Perez. With discussions heating up, things could get interesting. The Pirates are still targeting Wade Davis or Jeremy Hellickson to be included into the deal. The Rays reluctance to offer Davis or Hellickson yesterday was a reason the Pirates pursued the Florida/Boston deal.
2:13 p.m. Bay/Grabow being talked about to Tampa but Grabow to Tampa is up in the air at this moment. The Phillies also showing interest in Grabow.
2:11 p.m. Talks are back on with the Tampa Rays according to Jayson Stark.
2:05 p.m. Rosenthal speculates “the collapse of the talks will spur further discussions between the Pirates and Rays over a deal involving Pirates left fielder Jason Bay.”
1:44 p.m. Jayson Stark is confirming the Blue Jays have inquired about Bay with the Cardinals being unconfirmed. The Dodgers made a inquiry I’ve been told.
1:26 p.m. Speculation is rampant that the major holdup is the Marlins are asking for more money to be involved. All signs point to the prospect issue being resolved. The money factor could be the deal breaker. Well see in the next two hours whether Boston is desperate enough to move Manny.Stay tuned.
1:13 p.m. Less than three hours to the trade deadline. Talks are not dead. The holdup remains that fourth prospect I mentioned earlier. If this deal falls through, The Pirates will hold onto Bay and look to move him this winter where teams like Oakland and Toronto will be lining up to get him.
1:11 p.m. emails coming in about Paulino from fans: Here’s what I had yesterday on the previous trade deadline page – 8:01 p.m. per last night “This is not coming from my main source but there speculation that Ronnie Paulino has drawn interest from Florida and Minnesota. Florida is also among teams i mentioned earlier that have shown interest in John Grabow.” – DePaoli –
12:54 p.m. Toronto Pursuing Bay? Jayson stark is reporting the Blue Jays are in on Bay. The Blue Jays did pursue Bay last season. waiting for more info.
12:39 p.m. The Rays are no longer in the running for Jason Bay? That’s what some insiders are saying. Waiting for confirmation on that
12:37 p.m. Hermida to Pittsburgh has been agreed upon. Pittsburgh wants four Prospects in return. Right now three prospects are being offered, with Florida send two and Boston one. Pittsburgh seeks the 4th prospect from Boston. Boston is desperate to move Manny.
12:30 p.m. According to CNNSI John Heyman, Manny Ramirez approves trade to Florida. Deal is still not finalized.
12:25 p.m. The main framework of the deal remains Bay/Grabow heading to Boston. I’m not sold on the Jack Wilson talk but there are plenty of insiders indicating his name is coming up since late last night.
12:16 p.m. A source close to the situation believes the deal is mostly done but the Pirates are asking for one extra prospect. Some interesting Jack Wilson rumblings going around. Another solution being discussed at this moment is the Pirates sending Jack Wilson to the Red Sox, who would then send another player to the Marlins. The Pirates would get Lowrie and a Marlin prospect for Wilson.
10:48 a.m. According to ESPN’s Peter Gammons, the Marlins have acquired lefty reliever Arthur Rhodes for 22 year-old righty Gaby Hernandez.
10:30 a.m. Onto the mailbag: a emailer poses this question – “you posted the Marlins were a longshot to acquire Bay yesterday afternoon. If the three way trade falls through, what about the Marlins and Bucs coming to agreement? — longshot but there’s always a possibility considering how high the Pirates value Hermida.
10:22 a.m. It’s hard to get a strong vibe whether Doug Mientkiewicz will be moved. Mientkiewicz has been a leader in the clubhouse and the Pirates would like to keep him around next season. LA Dodgers and New York Mets have inquired about Mientkiewicz and there could be a few others as the trade deadline looms.
10:18 a.m. My source remains confident this deal will get done but as I’ve been saying, Ryan Tucker is the key. Discussions are still on-going.
9:45 a.m. The key to the finalization of the Pirates/Marlins/Red Sox deal is Ryan Tucker. My sources contend he is being offered while others indicate it’s up in the air. Pittsburgh values Hermida and Tucker higher than the high end ceiling players the Rays are willing to offer.
9:42 a.m. Mets and Rangers interested in Ian Snell. Jon Heyman of CNNSI speculates the Mets have looked into the idea of dealing for Snell and using him in the bullpen.
9:29 a.m. Jayson Stark is reporting “Despite reports that left-handed reliever John Grabow would wind up in Boston, indications are that he would actually go to the Marlins if this trade gets done.”
8:41 a.m. The Rays are keeping a close eye on Jason Bay just in case the Pirates proposed deal with Boston falls through. Rays executives have been telling insiders they expect Bay to be traded to Boston, and the Rays are now pursuing Adam Dunn as their plan B. The Rays front office is not expected to move on Dunn until the FLA-BOS-PIT trade appears to be official.
8:35 a.m. The White Sox may not be done. According to the Chicago Sun Times, the White Sox are targeting reliever Huston Street in trade talks. The acquisition of Griffey is not surprising considering the Sox have had interest in last summer.
8:10 a.m. – White Sox acquire Ken Griffey Jr
Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports is reporting Ken Griffey Jr. has been traded to the White Sox, pending his approval. Rosenthal indicates Griffey will decide Thursday morning whether he will accept the trade. Griffey is hitting .246 with 14 home runs and 50 RBIs this season.
