Lawrence Timmons returns: First round draft pick Lawrence Timmons finally returned to practice today. Timmons was very limited but this is a start.
Davis making a strong impression: I’ve been told from a very good source who writes for the Post-Gazette, that Carey Davis has this team made. The Steelers wanted to see what Davis could do at fullback against the Packers and the coaches came away very impressed. With his versatility to play fullback and running back he will be on the 53 man roster. Running back Gary Russell is also making a strong bid to make the team but for him to unseat Veron Haynes, he will have to show he can be a situational third down back.
Townsend over McFadden? The surprise of camp has been Deshea Townsend working with the first team over McFadden. Townsend has looked solid in the preseason but McFadden is a superior talent and at this stage of Townsends career, he is no longer a everydown player. Townsend is suited to play in nickle and dime situations. I just hope Tomlin is not giving Townsend the starting job based on Townsend having seniority over McFadden. If that’s the case, it will go against everything Tomlin has preached.
Position Battles: Courtest of Ed Bouchette
Ryan Clark, who gave way to Anthony Smith as the starter Saturday night, was back with the first team at free safety in practice. Willie Colon continued to run with the first team at right offensive tackle. Max Starks played left tackle with Marvel Smith out. Cornerback Deshea Townsend continued to run with the first-team defense ahead of Bryant McFadden, and offensive right guard Kendall Simmons stayed ahead of Chris Kemoeatu. With Harrison back practicing with the first team at right outside linebacker, Clark Haggans moved back to the left side and rookie LaMarr Woodley ran behind Haggans.
