Modano mulling options
The Detroit Red Wings are reportedly making a strong pitch to lure veteran center Mike Modano to Detroit.
However, Modano has heard from other teams in recent days.
According to a league source, the Pittsburgh Penguins, San Jose Sharks and New York Rangers have reached out to Modano.
A Pens’ contact said the Penguins are “kicking the tires” on Modano and he’s among 3-to-4 forwards the Penguins have discussed internally.
The Penguins are exploring options to bring in a veteran third line center. Pens GM Ray Shero recently said that he’s eyeing a veteran with “character.”
Modano, 40, had 14 goals and 16 assists last season and is wavering between retirement or joining a contender to win a championship.
The Penguins pursued Modano heavily in the summer of 2005, offering the veteran center a five year deal worth $18.5 million. Modano at the time was a top target of then player/owner Mario Lemieux.
