The Hockey Hall of Fame announced today it will induct defensemen Chris Chelios, Scott Niedermayer and forward Brendan Shanahan as part of its 2013 class. Niedermayer, Chelios and Shanahan headline the 2013 class that also includes Geraldine Heaney and two-time Stanley Cup-winning coach Fred Shero.
Shero is the father of Penguins GM Ray Shero and Shero’s induction is long overdue after being a great builder of the game.
Chelios and Niedermayer were elected in their first year of eligibility. Niedermayer was one of the great two-way defensemen of his time and had great skating ability. Niedermayer finished his career with 740 points and a plus-167 rating in 1,263 games.
