The Pirates on Saturday announced second-year phenom Paul Skenes has been named the opening day starter. There was some thought the Pirates would opt against Skenes on opening day to make sure things aligned for him to start in the home opener. On a video posted by the Pirates, Skenes comes into Derek Shelton’s Office as the manager and ace start talking about Bubba Chandler before Shelton breaks the news to Skenes as the two stand up and hug each other. Skenes who won the 2024 Rookie-of-The-Year award, also finished Top-3 in the NL Cy Young Voting. Pittsburgh opens the season March 27th against the Miami Marlins and are on the road for the first seven games of the season. Friday April 4th against the New York Yankees is the Pirates home opener.
