WBS Penguins: Colin McDonald scored twice and the Wilkes Barre/Scranton Penguins took Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal, defeating the Hershey Bears 3-1 on Friday night.
Game 2 is Saturday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena.
The Penguins were 2-for-5 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
Cal O’Reilly also scored, netting the game winning goal. Jason Williams and Alex Picard each had 2 assists.
Brad Thiessen made 19 saves in the victory, losing his shutout bid with 1:52 remaining in the game.
MORROW SCORES IN GAME 1 OF CONFERENCE FINAL
Top prospect Joe Morrow continues to be a point producer on the power play.
In Game 1 of the Western Conference Final, Morrow scored in the Portland Winterhawks 5-4 overtime win over Tri-City on Friday night. Game 2 is Saturday night.
Morrow scored a power play marker at 10:56 of the third period, giving Portland a 4-3 lead. It was Morrow’s 3rd goal of the playoffs, giving him 3 goals and 7 assists in 12 playoff games and a plus-10 rating. Morrow had a strong regular season, collecting 17 goals and 47 assists for 64 points in 62 games played, including 30 power play assists, which ranked 4th in the WHL and added 10 power play goals.
KUHNHACKL SCORES 5TH OF THE PLAYOFFS IN SERIES OPENER
Winger Tom Kuhnhackl (5G-3A-8Pts) scored 7:04 into the third period and the Niagara Ice Dogs defeated the Ottawa 67’s 2-1 in overtime on Friday night to take Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Final.
Kuhnhackl’s third period marker was his 5th goal of the playoffs in 11 games.
