PITTSBURGH 3 – CHICAGO 0
Win: Wandy Rodriguez (1-0)
Loss: Edwin Jackson (0-1)
Save: Jason Grilli (1)
For months Pirates GM Neal Huntington has taken a lot of heat from the media and fan base for not having an all-in mindset last year at the trade deadline but many seem to downplay the acquisition of Wandy Rodriguez when looking back at last years trade deadline.
Rodriguez was a significant addition because of the term on his contract as he’s signed through 2014.
Rodriguez is the best pitcher on the Pirates staff and he showed that tonight in the Pirates 3-0 win, throwing 6 2/3 shutout innings, allowing two hits, while striking out six and walking just one.
Rodriguez night was highlighted by a knee buckling curve ball to strikeout Brent Lillibridge in the top of the seventh with one out and the bases loaded.
“That’s a pro’s pitch,” manager Clint Hurdle said. “No kid is going to throw that pitch.”
Hurdle was spot on in that pitch was a “pro’s pitch” from the crafty veteran.
Rodriguez is pivotal to the Pirates competing this season as the top-3 of the rotation is going to be so important. A lot will also be falling on James McDonald’s shoulders who gets the start tomorrow.
