The Pittsburgh Pirates agreed to terms with the following two selections from this year’s First-Year Player Draft.
Tyler Waldron: Went 4-6 with three saves, 56 strikeouts and a 5.90 ERA (61.0ip/40er) in 23 games (seven starts) as a junior with Oregon State this year…Team was eliminated from the College World Series in the Gainesville Regionals on June 6…
Was a 32nd round selection in the 2007 MLB First-Year Player Draft by Florida, but did not sign… Played 2008 season for Pacific University, where he went 3-7 with a 5.20 ERA and a team-leading 91.2 innings in 15 starts…
Posted a 6-4 record and a 4.15 ERA in 16 appearances (14 starts) with Oregon State in 2009…Is a graduate of Golden Sierra High School, where he was a four-year allleague performer and two-time Most Valuable Player for the Grizzlies…
Was also named the Sacramento Player-of-the-Year in 2007…Posted a 0.65 ERA as a senior, allowing just seven earned runs in 76 innings…Also hit .530 with 12 doubles, two triples and two home runs as a high school senior…Had a 7-2 record and 1.13 ERA as a junior at Golden Sierra HS.
Vincent Payne: Made four starts and 14 appearances as a freshman for the Cypress College Chargers in 2010…Finished the year with a 1-3 record, 18 strikeouts and a 7.58 ERA in 19.0 innings pitched…
Is a graduate of El Modena High School in Orange County, CA…Led the Vanguards to a Century League championship as a junior…Led the team in hits as a senior and was a two-year letterwinner…Also excelled in basketball.
The Pirates have now signed a total of eight players from this year’s draft.
