The Pittsburgh Pirates are set to sign 34 year old righty reliever Jason Grilli, who was pitching for the Philadelphia Phillies Triple-A team.
While Grilli does not fit the description of an 8th inning reliever that the Pirates are actively seeking, he does add depth and has a past with manager Clint Hurdle.
Grilli spent the 2008 season with the Rockies and part of the 2009 season. In 2008, he had good success under Hurdle, posting a 2.93 ERA in 61 1 /3 innings.
Grilli though hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2009 and it begs the question whether he will be an upgrade over anybody the Pirates got.
He missed the entire 2010 season due to knee surgery.
Grilli is 4-1 with a 1.93 ERA and three saves in 28 games at Triple-A. Grilli throws 93-94 and is regarded as having a power slider.
The Pirates will have to clear a roster spot on their 40-man before the deal can be official.
