Is Alexei Ponikarovsky headed to free agency? According to a league source, Pens GM Ray Shero and Rick Curran the agent for Ponikarovsky have no talks scheduled for this week and Ponikarovsky’s camp does not expect any talks to take place until next week in Los Angeles for the draft when Curran expects to see Shero.
Team sources have indicated over the past couple weeks that the Penguins have an interest in retaining Ponikarovsky but both sides are expected to explore their options in free agency first.
Ponikarovsky is seeking a multi-year deal in the 3-to-4 year range and according to those close to Ponikarovsky, he still considers Pittsburgh a long-term option.
8-to-10 teams made inquiries on Ponikarovsky prior to the trade deadline, according to Leafs GM Brian Burke.
Interest is expected to be high for Ponikarovsky on the open market.
