Eklund of HockeyBuzz is reporting the Penguins are a possible suitor for Derek Morris. I can confirm no trade offer has been made to Phoenix for Derek Morris but the Penguins appear to be looking around for another defenseman at a reasonable price under 2 million per season via trade or free agency . This morning i received some insight that the Penguins are looking for another right handed defensive defenseman. Their goal is to go into the season with 8 NHL ready defenseman but all of this does not add up. Despite the fact they just resigned Scuderi and signed Sydor the speculation will not go away about the Penguins interested in picking up another defenseman. Ossi Vannanen makes sense to me but well see where these Morris rumors go. I ll post anything as soon as i find out.
Bill Guerin has not received any offers of 4 million per season that he is seeking. Turned down a 2 yr offer from the Isles last night. His price could be dropping.
- The Penguins have signed goaltender David Brown who just finished his senior year at the University of Notre Dame. In 2006-07, Brown led all goaltenders in wins posting a 30-6-3 record. He also he led the NCAA in goals-against average at 1.58 and posted a .931 save percentage, which ranked second in the nation. The Penguins envision Brown as Marc Andre Fleury’s backup down the road but he is still a few years away. He will most likely be given the chance to be the go-to go in Wilkes Barrie this season while Danny Sabourin will back up Fleury. The Penguins would also like to sign Nolan Schaeffer but he is seeking a 1 way contract which the Penguins are not offering.
- The Penguins are still interested in possibly adding some depth on defense at a low price and 3rd line face off guy at a reasonable price.
- Soloman Torres of the Pittsburgh Pirates has requested a trade. Torres started the season as the closer then was replaced by Matt Capps. Despite his rocky season three teams have inquired about Torres the BuzzontheBurgh learned today. It’s a shame MLB trade deadline for the Pirates can’t be like the Penguins in day 1 of free agency. That was a lot of fun. It would be great to speculate the Pirates are in the running for Adam Dunn sweepstakes. Anyways well see what Littlefield can get for Torres but it won’t be much considering how hard Littlefield is to deal with.
- TSN is reporting the New Jersey Devils have signed Danius Zubrus. It’s been a quiet day 3 but some big names are still available. Right now in the Atlantic Division The Flyers, and Rangers drastically improved while the Penguins also made their selves better. The Devils signing of Zubrus will be a nice addition to them but he is no Scott Gomez. They still have holes to fill with the departed Brian Rafalski. He is going to be hard to replace. As for the New York Islanders, their roster looks like Rick Dipietro backstopping a minor league team.
