Amidst a six game winless streak, the schedule broke in the Penguins advantage and the team put together back to back victories after wins against the Arizona Coyotes Sunday night, followed by a come from behind 5-4 win over the Vancouver Canucks Tuesday night on home-ice. The Penguins love a wide open game no matter how many puck moving defensemen might be out of the lineup like the case is right now with Kris Letang, Jeff Petry out, and one thing the aging stars remain great at that they can still take advantage of clubs that play with no structure to their game.
Hello Vancouver Canucks, who are just a mess of a talented hockey club that plays a style of game that brings out the best in likes of Evgeni Malkin who starred in the win. The back-to-back wins were important in the short-term but Friday night’s loss, against the Jets was more of a reality check. Chalk up absences on the blueline and who was in goal all you want, but anyone can see this forward group is so easy to play against and it’s a group that lacks those hard to play against glue guys that compete and compete night in and night out when the aging stars don’t have their A-games going.
People can say all they want that Jared McCann didn’t score in the post-season and wouldn’t be putting up the numbers here like he is in Seattle, but Pittsburgh’s decision making in the expansion draft has become front office malpractice and the domino effect it’s had. 18 months later it’s truly set the organization back in not having a good enough forward group to be a serious contender.
McCann has scored 60 goals since the start of 2021-2022 season. 60 Goals is 60 goals. You just can’t let talent out the door like Pittsburgh did when you’re a top-heavy team. Others during that span who are dead weight some nights.
- Kasperi Kapanen 28 Goals
- Brock McGinn 30 Goals
- Teddy Blueger 18 Goals
Not breaking news here, but the Penguins are scouring the trade market for a pest like a Brandon Tanev and two-way scoring forward like Jared McCann. Management is chasing their own tail……..
