Penguins GM Jim Rutherford this morning appeared on The Fan Morning Show from the 8:00 – 9:00 A.M. hour and among the interesting topics Rutherford addressed is the decision to play Phil Kessel with Sidney Crosby, the “risk” Pascal Dupuis is taking, hinting at a possible second line combination that will have a lot of grit on Evgeni Malkin’s wing and his admiration for what Sergei Gonchar can bring to the table.
On the decision to play Kessel with Crosby to start camp:
“That’s really Mike Johnston’s decision. He has to start somewhere,” Rutherford told the hosts.”We have luxury he can play with Crosby or Malkin. So to start camp that’s what he [Mike Johnston] felt.”
Malkin was disappointed to lose Hornqvist as a winger last season:

Rutherford on Sergei Gonchar
“We’re going to give Sergei a real good shot at making [it]. There are some things that he can bring to the table that we need. If he can do well in preseason and show that he can keep the pace, he’s going to have a good chance to catch a spot.”
